Healthy foods are often associated with being green. But is the opinion far from the truth, and are green goods for you? In most walks of like, green is good and red is danger. We learned that when growing up at school. However, does it translate to foods? It pretty much does with all sorts of packaging, but it doesn’t necessarily translate into foods. Red peppers and tomatoes are two foods that immediately spring to mind. These are both vegetables and are considered to be healthy. Below, we go through many of the foods that we have included in our healthy recipes and discuss whether there is a correlation between healthy foods and their colour.
Green foods which are good for you
Healthy Food Reviews like to add broccoli, cabbage, peas and even green beans to their recipes. What do all of these healthy foods and vegetables have in common? They are green! So, from a quick glance, it does look like green foods are good for you.
Even if you are having a quiet night in and aren’t eating particularly healthy food, it is still good to include vegetables. Healthy Food Reviews actually like to include a side of broccoli and carrots alongside most of our meals, including pizza. Please don’t judge us. If there is not one splash of green on our meal then it is not a Healthy Food Reviews meal. Even on a trip to Pizza Hut, we’ve been known to spend more time at the salad bar rather than scoffing actual pizza. Another great example would be a Roast Dinner.
Although not considered to be healthy, adding broccoli to meals such as a Roast does somewhat make it healthier. As a uni student, chicken in breadcrumbs and chips was always justified with broccoli. As green food, broccoli gets our vote as being healthy. It is a good source of fibre and protein, meaning it is also good for weight loss. There are plenty of other essential vitamins that you can add.
Cucumber is a green vegetable that is increasingly popular. It can be added to most meals and sometimes eaten on its own. At a Pizza Hut Salad bar, cucumber is a popular choice. It often helps to add flavour and juice to your meals. Healthy Food Reviews often add them to our lunchtime meals. It is one of the most common aspects of a British garden salad, alongside lettuce.
Lettuce is another green food that is commonly associated with cucumber because it goes so well together. A lot of people turn their nose up at healthy green foods like cucumber and lettuce because they find them boring. Add a bit of salad dressing or vinaigrette to the meal and it should spice things up for you nicely. Don’t add too much though otherwise, it will make the healthy recipe redundant due to the intake of calories.
Colourful meals including green and red foods
Of course, you don’t always have to have just green foods. You need a varied and balanced diet. All of this helps with weight loss, which is probably your end goal. A lot of people consider going vegetarian or starting a vegan lifestyle to mean that you will only eat green foods. This is not the case. You want your meal to often look like traffic lights. Like red peppers, orange and yellow peppers, and green peppers. These are all considered to be healthy. Same with tomatoes. An ideal salad and healthy recipe contain cucumber, peppers and tomatoes. These won’t all be green. If they are, you probably need to reconsider where you are getting your food products from.
Strawberries are good for you
Earlier on, we discussed cucumber and lettuce, as well as broccoli. Now, we can discuss strawberries. Often considered a summertime delicacy, strawberries are a lovely fruit that can only be good for you. Not only do they taste nice, but they can also go with anything. They are one of Britain’s most common flavours. Turned into milkshakes, yoghurts and candy bars, every British person loves strawberries in the summertime.
But strawberries are red? So are they not dangerous? No, in actual fact they are not. Despite being red, strawberries are often included as part of a healthy diet. If you are a meat-eater, a vegan, or even a vegetarian, you can always have strawberries in your diet.
Should you avoid foods that aren’t green if you are trying to be healthy?
Ultimately, you do not need to avoid foods just because of what colour they are. Yes, healthier foods tend to be greener, but you should do your research before cutting out any red foods.
